HEALTH & NUTRITION

at BC Academy

At BC Academy, we believe that nurturing future-ready learners begins with a strong foundation in health and well-being. Nutrition is more than sustenance—it is a cornerstone of physical vitality, emotional stability, and academic readiness. Rooted in our vision to empower learners to lead with purpose, and our mission to inspire, innovate, and impact, our approach to health and nutrition promotes lifelong positive habits that enable every learner to thrive.

A Whole-School Commitment to Well-Being

In our values-driven environment, healthy eating supports every child’s right to belong to a safe, inclusive community; to be challenged to make informed, balanced choices; and to achieve optimal well-being and learning outcomes. Staff and parents serve as role models, guiding children in developing a mindful and respectful relationship with food.

A Whole-School Commitment to Well-Being

We are always delighted to celebrate our students' birthdays and acknowledge these special moments. At the end of the school day, we sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the birthday child, creating a joyful atmosphere. However, to maintain a safe and healthy environment:

Promoting Healthy Eating Habits

Mealtimes at BC Academy are seen as valuable social learning opportunities. Beyond nourishment, they are a time for building friendships, practicing gratitude, and learning about nutrition and moderation. We reinforce these principles both in the classroom and through regular family communication, promoting a consistent message between school and home.

Celebrating Birthdays Mindfully

Celebrations are a cherished part of school life and a chance to foster joy and community spirit. At BC Academy, we mark birthdays in meaningful ways:

  • We sing 'Happy Birthday' to celebrate each child during the final part of the day.
  • To ensure a safe, inclusive environment, cakes and gifts may only be brought in if individually wrapped and suitable for all children (i.e., nut-free and pork-free).
  • All food brought into the school must meet our health and safety guidelines.

Managing Food Allergies with Care

Safeguarding our learners is a top priority. Our robust allergy management procedures are designed to prevent exposure and respond effectively:

  • An up-to-date Food Allergy Register is maintained by the School Nurse and shared securely with staff.
  • All parents must update the school clinic with any medical or dietary changes.
  • Teachers remain vigilant during all events—such as National Day, International Day, bake sales, and birthdays—to prevent allergic exposure.
  • All staff receive training in emergency response and allergy management protocols.

A Shared Responsibility: School and Home

In line with our mission to inspire and impact, we believe healthy habits are most powerful when developed collaboratively. We invite families to be active partners in supporting balanced nutrition at home and reinforcing the values of self-care, community, and respect.

Together, we are building a generation of healthy, informed, and resilient global citizens—equipped to make purposeful choices for themselves and their communities.

For any questions or individual concerns, our school clinic and teaching team are always available to support your child’s needs.
