EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

A Community Where Everyone Is Respected

BC Academy is committed to creating a welcoming community where every student, staff member, parent and visitor is treated with dignity, fairness and respect.

We value the diverse nationalities, cultures, faiths, experiences and perspectives represented within our school. This diversity strengthens our community and enriches learning for everyone.

Our Commitment to Equality

BC Academy does not accept discrimination based on:

  • Nationality or ethnicity

  • Religion or belief

  • Gender

  • Disability or additional needs

  • Age

  • Marital or family status

  • Any other protected personal characteristic

This commitment applies across all areas of school life, including admissions, teaching, assessment, behaviour management, employment, facilities, events, trips and online communications.

What Discrimination Means

Discrimination includes treating someone unfairly because of a personal characteristic. It may be direct or indirect and can include harassment, exclusion or victimisation.

BC Academy expects every member of the community to challenge discriminatory language and behaviour appropriately and report concerns promptly.

Fair and Inclusive Admissions

Admissions criteria are published and applied consistently to all applicants.

Where a student has a disability or additional learning need, the Admissions team works with the Head of Inclusion and the family to understand the student’s needs and identify reasonable adjustments.

Applications involving additional needs are considered individually, fairly and in accordance with the school’s Admissions and Inclusion policies.

An Inclusive Curriculum

Our curriculum aims to represent a balanced range of cultures, faiths, identities and perspectives.

Teachers are expected to:

  • Use inclusive and respectful language

  • Avoid stereotypes and biased assumptions

  • Help students see themselves represented positively in learning

  • Address discriminatory comments or behaviour

  • Adapt teaching and assessment where reasonable adjustments are required

  • Promote respect, tolerance and global citizenship

Curriculum content is periodically reviewed to identify bias, improve representation and ensure that learning materials reflect the diversity of our community.

Celebrating Diversity

BC Academy celebrates Dubai and the UAE’s multicultural and multi-faith character.

Our school community recognises important national, cultural and religious occasions through assemblies, lessons, displays and events. These may include UAE National Day, Flag Day, Ramadan, Eid and other occasions represented within our community.

Students are encouraged to lead activities that promote inclusion, cultural awareness and mutual respect.

Respecting Individual Needs

We respect reasonable religious observance, cultural practices and dietary requirements.

We also make reasonable adjustments to teaching, assessment, communication and the school environment for students with disabilities or additional needs.

Further information about identifying and supporting individual learning needs is available in our separate Inclusion Policy page.

Equality in Employment

BC Academy applies equality, diversity and inclusion principles throughout recruitment and employment.

Employment decisions—including recruitment, pay, promotion and professional development—are based on merit, experience, performance and suitability for the role.

The school:

  • Uses inclusive language in recruitment

  • Assesses candidates against objective criteria

  • Trains relevant staff to recognise unconscious bias

  • Provides fair access to professional development

  • Considers reasonable workplace adjustments for staff with disabilities or health conditions

Training and Awareness

All staff receive equality, diversity and inclusion training during induction and at least annually thereafter.

Staff involved in admissions, recruitment or disciplinary decisions receive additional guidance on recognising and reducing unconscious bias.

Students learn about respect, diversity and inclusion through age-appropriate lessons, assemblies and pastoral activities.

Reporting Discrimination

Anyone who experiences or witnesses discrimination, harassment, exclusion or victimisation should report it promptly.

Students may speak to a trusted teacher, Head of Section or school counsellor.

Parents and guardians may raise a concern through the school’s Feedback and Complaints procedure.

Staff may report concerns to their line manager, HR or through the appropriate grievance or whistleblowing process.

Reports are acknowledged within two school days and handled fairly, sensitively and confidentially.

What Happens After a Report?

Where appropriate, the school will conduct a confidential investigation and speak separately with the people involved.

If discrimination is found to have occurred, proportionate action will be taken under the relevant student behaviour or staff disciplinary procedure. The person affected will also be offered appropriate support.

No one will be treated unfairly or victimised for raising a genuine concern in good faith.

Shared Responsibilities

Everyone at BC Academy has a part to play.

School leaders ensure that admissions, curriculum, employment and disciplinary decisions are free from discriminatory bias.

Teachers and staff model respectful behaviour, challenge discrimination and create inclusive learning environments.

Students treat others with respect and report discrimination or exclusion.

Parents and guardians support the school’s values and engage respectfully with families and staff from all backgrounds.

Monitoring and Improvement

BC Academy reviews anonymised information about discrimination-related concerns, admissions decisions, staff training and community feedback.

This helps the school identify patterns, remove barriers and improve its practices.

Our goal is to ensure that everyone at BC Academy feels respected, represented, included and able to participate fully in school life.
